There are a lot of family vehicles on the market today. Which one is right for you and your family? The answer relies on five things below:
1. Safety features
Safety of children and adults is important in a roomy car. Many of the newer models on the market offer side curtain and head curtain airbags (in second and third row seating areas). Some types of vehicles like SUVs and crossovers come with traction and stability control, which can help prevent rolling and other mishaps. Some newer models also have rollover detection which can help prevent serious injury in the event of contact with another vehicle or road hazard.
2. Passenger capacity
The passenger capacity is a feature to think about when purchasing a car for the entire family. Smaller families can probably get by with a smaller SUV, sedan or vehicle with 2nd row seating only. If there are children in car seats the amount of space needed should be considered. It may be better to think about a vehicle that can bring 7 people or an SUV with 3rd row seating if you are planning additions to your family in the near future.
3. Type of weather
Where you live should make a difference in the kinds of cars you are considering. If you live in a region known to get plenty of snow you will want a car that can handle icy roads and snow. It is not necessary to own a four wheel drive vehicle. Front wheel drive can be just as useful as long as the vehicle’s overall handling capabilities are good.
A rear wheel drive SUV is probably not going to handle as well in snow and on icy roads. Rear wheel vehicles are suitable for those who live in warmer climates and rarely have to worry about snow or ice.
4. Type of cargo
The type of cargo you will be hauling can make a difference in the type of car selected. If you need space for camping gear or sporting gear look for larger storage areas and seats that fold to add more space for hauling gear. Some minivans and SUVs come with folding seats in both the 2nd and 3rd rows.
5. Fuel efficiency
Today’s newer vehicles are designed for greater fuel efficiency. If fuel economy is important try to stay with a vehicle that meets your needs but does not have additional room you will rarely use. A vehicle with an aerodynamic design will also be more fuel efficient. Larger vehicles today may come with hybrid engines which can make operating them more cost effective.
There are many things to consider when choosing a family vehicle. Fuel efficiency, safety, design, and cargo space are a few of the most important features to think about before you begin the search. Comfort features may also be important for families that take frequent vacations or road trips.
